AI & the workforce

How AI is reshaping the workforce — and what it means for who you hire

The biggest force shaping who you’ll hire over the next five years isn’t the economy — it’s AI. The data points to a workforce in motion, where the skills that matter are shifting faster than most hiring plans account for.

by 2030, AI and related tech are projected to create 170 million new jobs and displace 92 million — a net gain of 78 million, with enormous churn underneath.World Economic Forum, Future of Jobs Report 2025

The churn is bigger than the headline

That net number hides the real story: the WEF estimates structural churn equal to 22% of all jobs by 2030, and 86% of employers expect AI and information-processing technology to transform their business in that window. Roles aren’t just appearing and disappearing — they’re being rewritten.

Skills are the new currency

On average, about 39% of the core skills a job requires are expected to change by 2030. Employers know it: 63% name the skills gap as the single biggest barrier to transforming their business, and 85% plan to prioritize upskilling. For founders, hiring against a fixed checklist of today’s tools is a losing strategy.

Hire AI-enabled operators, not AI-resistant ones

The premium is shifting toward people who use AI to do more with a leaner team — operators who fold AI into sales, marketing, research and decisions rather than treating it as someone else’s job. For a startup, one AI-fluent operator can cover ground that used to take three hires.

What this means for who you hire

Optimize for adaptability over a perfect résumé. Hire for learning speed, judgment and AI fluency — alongside the human skills (creative thinking, resilience, collaboration) the same WEF report flags as rising in value. The right hire in 2026 is someone who will still be the right hire when the tools change again.

It’s why “AI-enabled operators” is one of the core categories we hire for.
